WHAT IS INTERACT?

Interact is a club for young people ages 14-18 who want to join together to tackle the issues in their community that they care most about. Clubs benefit from sponsorship by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance.

Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting and can be either school or community based.  Interact's name is a combination of the words international and action.  With clubs in over 120 countries and geographical areas, Interact is truly an international phenomenon.

Interact is both work and play!

Interact is a service club, which means you will do work.  It gives you the opportunity to work with other individuals for a greater cause.  In Interact Club, students learn to depend on each other, share ideas, and build leadership skills.  Although there is work involved, it should be emphasized that there is fun for all as well; the social and service aspects of the club blend together.

What does an Interact Club do?

The purpose of Interact is to provide opportunity for young people to work together in a world fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding.  Interact Clubs organize a variety of projects and activities, depending primarily on the interests of the club members.  However, within the Interact program, all clubs undertake activities to enhance leadership skills, serve their community, and expand international understanding.  Together, these activities ensure a balanced club program and provide important experience and opportunities for the personal development of each member. Each club carries out local service projects that benefit its community or school, such as fundraisers for a variety of causes, blood drives, benefit concerts, and visits to nursing homes, and homeless shelters. Members also develop international service projects that expand their understanding of the world and promote goodwill.

Service Above Self is Rotary's foremost guiding principle.  An Interact Club's service projects are designed to improve the quality of life at home and abroad. These projects often address today's most critical issues, such as violence, drug abuse, AIDS, hunger, the environment, and illiteracy.  Each Interact Club is required to complete at least two major service projects annually; one to serve the community and another to promote international understanding.  Each should involve all or most of the members of the club.

About Rotary

Where it all began...

In 1960, Rotary President Harold T. Thomas urged members to find ways to encourage youth to become involved in the community.  Two years later, 23 students from Melbourne High School in Florida formed the first Interact Club.  Ever since, Rotarians have been empowering youth to serve locally and internationally.
